7 Mind-Blowing Operations Of India’s Intelligence Agency RAW

India’s Intelligence Agency is called RAW which stands for Research and Analysis Wing. For obvious reasons, the agency is very secretive about their operation and has conducted various covert operations over the years. Today we give you a few details about seven of their best operations that will completely blow your mind. Sit back and enjoy.

1. Operation Kahuta

This is considered as the boldest operation RAW ever conducted. The one reason for its failure was a big blunder by Indian Prime Minister, Morarji Desai. Kahuta is the name of the site for Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), which is Pakistan’s nuclear weapons lab. This was emerging as a main place for the development of long-range missile as well. RAW agents knew about this site and began an operation to stop it. Morarji Desai, the then Indian Prime Minister stopped the operations as Indira Gandhi started it. He even informed the then Pakistani Prime Minister, Zia-Ul-Haq, of the operation leading to Pakistan agents eliminating RAW agents from Kahuta.

2. Sri Lanka

India’s RAW agents began to train the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), to keep a close watch on Sri Lanka. The LTTE turned rouge and India had to send in the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) to stop the LTTE. The IPKF operation failed as IPKF agents did not consult with RAW agents before carrying out any operations. This resulted in a number of soldiers being killed on either side. The killing of Rajiv Gandhi resulted from this fallout between the LTTE and RAW.

3. Operation Chanakya

Operation Chanakya had only one goal – Infiltrate the ISI-backed separatist groups in Kashmir and restore peace in the valley. RAW infiltrated the area successfully and began gathering military intelligence. RAW also managed to create a split in the Hizb-Ul-Mujahideen. This has been one of the most successful and brave RAW operations till date.

4. 2008 Mumbai Attacks

Approximately six months before the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai, RAW had intercepted various phone calls, which pointed at possible terror attacks on Mumbai. All of this information was passed to senior RAW officials who in turn passed it on to the National Security Advisor. A few hours before the attacks, RAW agents also picked up satellite conversations. This was again passed on to the National Security Advisor. The NSA ignored the intelligence as baseless. The rest as they say is history.

5. Snatch Operations

RAW along with the Intelligence Bureau had received information that terrorists were infiltrating India via Nepal and other neighboring countries. RAW sprung into action and conducted snatch operations, picking up suspects from foreign countries. RAW and IB started monitoring suspected terrorist activity in Nepal and have conducted over 400 snatch operations in the last decade. Their best snatches till date are Lashkar militant Tariq Mehmood, Bhupinder Singh Bhuda, and Sheikh Abdul Khwaja.

6. Operation Smiling Buddha

India’s Nuclear Program was named Operation Smiling Buddha. This was the first time RAW was involved in an operation conducted inside India. Their main responsibility was to keep the nuclear program under wraps. RAW succeeded brilliantly and even made it possible to detonate a 15-kiloton nuclear device at Pokhran without any of the international intelligence agencies knowing about it.

7. Sikkim Amalgamation

India always ruled Sikkim, however were constantly threatened by Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet to take over this state. RAW was given the responsibility of establishing a pro-Indian democratic government in Sikkim in 1972. By 1975, Sikkim was declared as the 22nd state of the Indian Union. Another feather in the hat for the best intelligence agency in the world.
