Animals are found in the world in all sizes and shapes. Some even come in really small sizes that are not even seen by the human eye. Parasitic wasp can be as tiny as 0.0001mm long; a tiny beetle is just 1 mm long and some mites are just 0.0002 mm long. Here is the list of some of the smallest animals on planet.

10. Madame Berthe’s Mouse Lemur

Madame Berthe’s Mouse Lemur is one of the smallest primates in the world. It is found in Madagascar. On average, it is around 92mm long and weighs only 30g. It is found in majority in Kirindy Mitea National Park, Western Madagascar.

9. Pygmy Marmoset

The Dwarf Monkey or Pygmy Marmoset is the smallest monkey in the world. It is found majorly in rainforests of Columbia, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. It is among the smallest true monkeys and primates. On average, it is around 14 to 16 cm long (with 15-20cm long tail). The weight of males is around 140g and females are 120g. Babies are just 15g. They live around 11 to 16 years and normally give birth to twins.

Just 7.9mm long, it is the smallest fish alive. It is the smallest vertebrate found in peat swamp forests of Sumatra Island in Indonesia and they can survive extreme level of drought because they are only 7.9 mm long. Acid water is their natural habitat (with pH level of just 2.9).


7. Pygmy Rabbit

It is world’s smallest rabbit found in North America. The weight of adult is just 400g and is 24cm to 29cm long. They use dense sagebrush for food and cover. They rely on well-used, extensive runways to escape routes from predators and travel.

Brazilian or Gold Frog is Southern Hemisphere’s smallest frog. Adults grow to just 9.8mm in body length. The Northern Hemisphere’s smallest frog is recently found in Monte Iberia, Cuba.

Thread Snakes or Slender Blind Snakes are the family of snakes which are considered to be the smallest snakes in the world. At around 11cm in length, Slender Blind Snakes are found in South and North America, Asia and Africa. Around 87 species are found of such snakes. They usually feed on termites and ants, and their larvae.

4. Kitti’s Hog-Nosed Bat

The Bumblebee Bat or Kitti’s Hog-nosed Bat from Burma and Thailand is world’s smallest bat, at 1.5g to 2g of weight and 30mm to 40mm in length. It has unique pig-like snout. It lives along the rivers in limestone caves. It feeds usually during short activity periods in the dawn and evening. Around 100 bats live in each cave and colonies range widely in size. It feeds insects in nearest forest areas.

It is the smallest turtle in the world. It is found mostly in South Africa. The length of males is just 6 to 8 cm and females are 10 cm.

2. Etruscan Shrew

The White-toothed Pygmy Shrew, Etruscan Pygmy Shrew or the Etruscan Shrew weighs just 1.2g to 2.7g and it is known to be the smallest mammal of the world. From its head to base of tail, it is around 36 to 53mm long, which is a bit longer than Bumblebee Bat. It inhabits mostly brush areas and forests from Southern Asia to the Southern Europe.

1. Bee Hummingbird

It is the smallest warm-blooded vertebrate and the smallest bird. It is found in Cuba and measures only 1.8g in weight and 5.7cm in length. It is supposed to eat around half of its overall body mass and drink around 8 times its body mass every day.
