India is a glorious nation with rich history and culture. India is famous for various inventions in the field of science and mathematics. There are many versions about the history of India however; there are little known facts about India that every citizen of this country should know. Presently, India is known to be home to almost one third of the world’s population living below the poverty line. However, this wasn’t always the case. India was one of the richest countries in the world. That is until the British invaded India in the 17th century. The Britishers robbed India of its wealth and used the population as their personal servants. By the time India got freedom from the British in 1947, it was too late and all the wealth was already gone.

India was the first country to mine diamonds in the world. In fact, up until 1896 India was the only source of diamonds to the world.
India has the fourth largest army in the world. It is also the second largest exporter of tea and rice. India tops the world with the production of jute, mica, milk, and pulses.
India gets its name Bharat from mythological emperor of Bharatha. The Japanese call India Tenjiku and the Chinese call India Tianzhu. Both these words mean ‘Heaven’.
The world’s first planned city and best sanitation system was discovered with the start of the Indus Valley Civilization.

Farming and herding began in India through the Mehrgarh Civilization.
The first university in the world was discovered in 500 BC in India. This was called Takshashila University, which is today called the Cambridge of India.

India has produced some of the greatest minds in the world. Kalidasa was the master of theater and drama. Aryabhata invented the decimal system and also approximated the value of pi and built trignometry. Kamasutra was written by Vatsayana.
India was attacked by 24 major famines between the period 1850 and 1900. This was the worst phase in Indian history killing millions of Indians. This was a major downfall in the rich history of India.

The first Indian National Congress was formed in 1885. This was India’s first step towards its freedom struggle.
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre is considered the turning point in India’s fight for freedom. All freedom protests prior to 1919 were peaceful. However, this massacre led to Indians becoming aggressive in their ouster of the British regime.
There are many stories about our history that make us feel proud of the nation that we live in. India may not be rich financially, however our culture and unity sets us apart from the world.
